Self-harm, also known as “self-injury,” and “non-suicidal self-injury,” is a way that some people cope with the stresses of everyday life. People who engage in self-harm often use this as a way of expressing emotions that can’t be put into words, as a distraction from life, or to release pent-up emotional pain. After a person self-injures, they may feel a release – for a while – until the painful emotions resurface, causing the individual to want to self-harm again. Many individuals who engage in self-harm wish to stop this behavior but do not know how. If you self-harm, know this: you deserve to feel better and can do so without hurting yourself.
Cutting can be used as a way of expressing and coping with deep emotional distress; hurting oneself can be the only way one knows how to manage these distressing feelings. Many individuals report feelings of self-loathing, sadness, emptiness, rage, and guilt that can trigger an episode of self-mutilation. Unfortunately, the release experienced by self-harm only lasts for a short time and creates more problems for the individual.
While most people assume that self-harm is the act of cutting oneself, but there are many ways in which a person can self-injure. These may include burning, hitting one’s head, hitting oneself, sticking objects into the skin, punching things, throwing one’s body against hard objects, intentionally picking at wounds to prevent healing, and ingesting poison or inappropriate objects. Other ways an individual may self-harm is to deliberately place themselves in danger such as driving recklessly, binge-drinking, ingesting too many drugs, or practicing risky sexual behaviors.
As self-harm is a temporary solution to an unresolved emotional issue, it is vital that those who engage in non-suicidal self-injury seek help. If you’re not sure where to turn, are afraid of telling another person for fear of judgment, or are scared to stop, it’s time for you to turn to the specialists at Delta Specialty Hospital. At our treatment clinic for healing, we offer compassionate care to help you understand and work through your emotional problems as well as medical attention for any of the consequences of your self-injurious behaviors. You don’t have to face this alone – let Delta help you learn to help yourself.

All medication decisions will be made by your treatment team and will be continuously monitored.
Individual therapy may be used when an individual requires more one-on-one time with a therapist. Time may be spent determining what has lead you to start harming yourself and healthier ways of coping. Although the majority of work is done in group sessions we do understand that there are times when an individual needs more of a private setting.
Group therapy is used to allow individuals the opportunity to connect with other individuals facing similar struggles. We offer both process-based and psycho-educational groups to allow you to work through your feelings and learn a bit more about self-harm and the treatment process.
Family therapy is offered at Delta for individuals who require help reestablishing family connections and work through problems within the family dynamic.
