Cocaine is an illegal stimulant that comes in the form of a white powder. People abuse cocaine by snorting it or mixing it with water so it can be injected. It can also be formed into small rocks (crack rocks) that many individuals smoke. It doesn’t matter how cocaine is abused – it is a dangerous substance that can lead to numerous negative effects such as heart attack, stroke, and even death. While the effects of cocaine taken alone are hazardous, the substance is particularly dangerous when used with alcohol and other drugs.

Cocaine causes you to feel as though you’ve been sped up. When first taking the drug you may feel full of vigor, joyful, and enthusiastic. After using the drug for a period of time however, your mood and personality can change. You may feel angry and irritated or anxious and paranoid. You might exercise poor judgment or make decisions that put you in hazardous situations. After the cocaine “rush” wears off, you may come down suddenly feeling as if you’ve collapsed, becoming fatigued and depressed unless you use more of the drug. You will also likely experience physical and psychological cravings.  After people experience this, most will begin to use more cocaine before the former dose wears off to avoid these withdrawal effects. This is likely to result in addiction and tolerance, a potentially dangerous condition consisting of the need to use more of the drug to obtain the same effects initially experienced.

At Delta, we understand how hard it is to leave coke behind and we are aware of the difficulty in remaining drug-free. This is why we don’t just focus on helping you get off the drug during rehab – we treat all of you. We provide you with many coping mechanisms to use to remain drug-free. Relapse prevention and continuity of care are the two primary objectives that must be used for successful rehab.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for cocaine addiction at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

Cocaine abuse and addiction wreaks havoc on every aspect of a person’s life – including their views, behaviors, interactions, and the ability to understand the world. Coke abuse can have serious symptoms and may progress to a point that their ability to function is limited.

When you first use cocaine, it may be a choice. Over time and with continued use, the substance can cause long-term changes in the brain’s reward system. When attempting to cut down, an individual may experience sudden depression and other withdrawal effects. Feeling unable to tolerate these symptoms, the individual feels forced into taking more cocaine. Thus, this behavior, which may have begun as a choice, is now out of your control. Coke controls you instead. This is one of the reasons that it is incredibly difficult to stop using coke without help and support. Delta’s skilled and compassionate staff can provide the support you need to begin your recovery so you can move towards a life that is filled with satisfaction and happiness. Most importantly, we can help you start to regain control over your world.
