Many people abuse substances such as illegal drugs, prescription drugs, alcohol, and tobacco for a variety of complicated reasons. The abuse of substances costs the individual and society at large a great deal of problems. There is a large toll that substance abuse takes on our emergency rooms, hospitals, prison systems, and inpatient behavioral health programs. While there has been a decline in usage of drugs such as cocaine in recent years, the usage of synthetic club drugs such as MDMA and Molly have seen a marked increase. Drugs of abuse offer the users some sort of intoxication that leads to alterations in perception, attention, physical comfort, and judgment.
Nearly all drugs of abuse produce tolerance – the need for increasing amounts of the drug in order to achieve the same levels of intoxication and physical and psychological dependence. Physical dependence occurs when an individual’s brain becomes dependent upon the drug to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The more challenging of the types of dependence, psychological dependence, is what causes the user to believe that he or she cannot function without the drug. Most drugs of abuse bring about withdrawal symptoms if abruptly discontinued or the amount is reduced and can range from a mild anxiety to seizures and hallucinations. If large enough amounts of the drugs are used, this can lead to overdose and death for many individuals.
The most commonly abused drugs include the following:
Alcohol – while often used as a way to unwind after a particularly stressful day, if not imbibed in moderation, alcohol can produce serious consequences. Alcohol depresses the brain, lowers inhibitions, decreases muscle control, and if used for a prolonged period of time, can lead to alcoholism. Health consequences can involve life-threatening withdrawal syndrome, damage to vital organs, and cancer.
Club drugs – these drugs are synthetic compounds that are becoming more and more drugs of abuse in nightclubs, and raves. Club drugs include Molly (mandy), Ecstasy (MDMA), GHB (G, Liquid XTC, blue nitro), Rohyphol (roofies), Ketamine (Special K), LSD (acid), and PCP (angel dust). These synthetic club drugs can cause dire consequences to a person’s health and wellbeing.
Cocaine – also called “crack,” “coke,” “snow,” and “rock” is a powerful illegal stimulant that can be injected, snorted, or swallowed. The duration of coke’s effects will vary depending upon the route of administration. Long-term abuse of coke can lead to damage in nearly all organ systems of the body, and injecting cocaine can lead to dire health consequences such as infection with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, or other blood borne pathogens.
Heroin – also called “black tar,” “H,” “smack,” and “horse,” is a highly addictive downer that can, if used in large amounts, lead to respiratory depression and death from overdose. Individuals can smoke, snort, or intravenously inject heroin, which quickly crosses the blood-brain barrier, leading to the intoxication effects. IV drug use can lead to infections from dirty needles and other serious health complications.
Inhalants – also known as “huffing,” are a group of substances including vapor-releasing solvents that produce levels of intoxication when inhaled. Long-term damage of huffing can be dire, leading to brain damage as well as damage to nearly every organ system in the body.
Marijuana – also called “pot,” “grass,” “weed,” and “herb” marijuana is the most commonly abused drug in the United States. Weed is generally smoked, but occasionally eaten, and can produce feelings of wellbeing and happiness. However, marijuana smoke often irritates the lungs as it contains many carcinogens. Pot is known as the gateway drug, often leading to the abuse of other more potent drugs such as methamphetamines, cocaine, and opioids.
Methamphetamines – also known as “crank,” “meth,” “ice,” and “speed” are highly potent neurotoxins that increase alertness and provides an intense surge of pleasure for the user. Meth can be injected, snorted, smoked, or eaten, and can lead to severe cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks and death, as well as psychological complications that include paranoia, hallucinations, and permanent brain damage.

Types of Treatment
Types of addiction treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN
When you come to us for help, you’ll first undergo a series of comprehensive medical and psychiatric examinations to allow us to gain more insight into what specific problems you are struggling with. Our medical examination will allow us to determine the necessity of detox treatment to help remove drugs from your system as well as any underlying medical concerns you may be facing. Our psychiatric examination will allow us to determine if you are suffering from a co-occurring mental disorder such as anxiety or depression. We’ll take the results of our examinations and create a plan of care that meets all of your needs.
If it is determined that you will benefit from medically monitored detox before you begin our inpatient treatment for substance abuse, this will be the first step in your treatment for substance addiction. While receiving detox treatment, you’ll be safely and effectively detoxed from all drugs in your system while being medically monitored 24 hours a day to treat any withdrawal symptoms or complications. We will also begin medical treatment to help address any health-related concerns before you are ready to join our inpatient addiction rehab center.
Medication may be used at the beginning of your inpatient stay with us to allow us to help manage unpleasant withdrawal symptoms to best allow you to focus on your recovery. Medications may be used on a short-term basis for some, gradually tapered down as you learn more appropriate coping strategies. Others may need long-term medication to help manage the symptoms of co-occurring disorders or to treat any medical concerns. In addition to medication and detox, we also provide a full range of therapies to help best manage your addiction.
We use individual therapy as a way for you to problem-solve some of the issues that have resulted from your addiction. You’ll also work to understand the roots of your addiction and discuss any co-occurring mental illnesses in an intimate environment.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach we use to help you see the ways in which negative thought patterns affect your behaviors. We’ll help to correct those negative thought patterns with more positive ways of viewing the world, thereby allowing you to make better decisions.
Group therapy is our primary therapeutic modality at Delta as we firmly believe that the best ways to manage addiction is through a group setting in which you are able to interact and share your struggles with others suffering from similar problems. We offer both process-based and psycho-educational groups to allow you to gain a better understanding of your addictions and co-occurring disorders.
As we recognize that you come from a larger unit of loved ones and family, we do try to include your family in your recovery process. Family sessions will be used to educate your loved ones about addiction, your recovery, and ongoing sobriety. We’ll also use these sessions to allow your loved ones the opportunity to share their concerns related to your addiction. We’ll help your loved ones connect with community resources to allow them to continue to heal.
In addition to our traditional therapeutic modalities, we also offer a number of experiential treatments that are aimed at treating the whole person. These may include:
- Nutritional and wellness counseling
- Therapeutic activities
